3 ways a hot tub can help you get a restful night’s sleep

One in three adults don’t get enough sleep, according to the CDC. If you frequently get less than seven hours of sleep per week, you might find yourself as the “one” in one and three! But don’t fret, the solution to your sleep woes might be sitting right in your backyard. Here are the ways your hot tub can help you solve your snoozing issues.

Temperature Change

When you get out of a hot tub your body experiences a temperature drop. The body’s core internal thermostat drops after leaving the water, which tells the body that it is time to rest. It essentially does the same thing that sleeping in a cold room might. Sleep usually occurs when body temperatures drop. Because of this, that temperature drop your body experiences by hopping out of a tub can signal to your body that it's bedtime.

Relax the Body

The buoyancy of water takes the weight off your joints- literally. It can actually reduce body weight by 90 percent. This removes pressure off parts of your body that may normally experience stress, and these effects can last long after you leave the tub. The warm water decreases blood pressure and heart rate, bringing your body to ideal sleeping conditions. With your body relaxed, anxieties over aches and pains can dissolve away. This process is a quick trip to Relaxationville, and will leave you ready for bed.

Relax the Mind

Sitting in warm water can reduce cortisol secretion as well as other hormones related to stress. This produces muscular relaxation and diminished anxiety. The calming effects of the water on the mind can prep your brain for sleep.

Soaking in hot water, such as a hot tub, for 15 to 20 minutes before bed can help you transition into a deep, fulfilling night’s sleep. Research done by our neighbors at Washington State University supports this. “We found the autonomic nervous system alters during warm water immersion, producing changes that are parallel to those seen during relaxation and accompanying a reduction in anxiety,” Dr. Bruce Becker, one of these WSU researchers, said at the 2008 World Aquatic Health Conference.

There you have it! Next time you find yourself having sleep troubles, try a 20 minute long hot tub soak. The Z’s are on their way! For added relaxation benefits, try adding relaxing scents and salts, available on our website.
